Google released their bowser, Chrome, to the public today. The browser is in its beta stages, so there would be room for improvement. I decided to test the browser to see its potential. I downloaded the browser from the Chrome’s site. Right now, the browser runs on windows XP and Vista only (I am sure Google would update the browser to run on Mac OS). Google boasts that the browser is the fastest browser with Javascript. Google offered a site to test the speed of browser when running Javascript.

I compared the overall Javascript Speed for Chrome and other browsers. This is the result

Chrome is the fastest while IE 7 is the slowest. My laptop uses Window Vista. Chrome is fast. I also like the speed dial pages. It is like Opera browser instead, it shows the websites you just visited. Opera’s speed dial are you favorite pages i.e you set them yourself. Chrome will be good for using Google’s products.

My problem with Chrome is that it takes more space on my hard drive then Firefox. Firefox 3 takes 24.8 Mb and Chrome takes 46.5 MB. The other problem I have with Chrome is that it distorts my blog. If I view my blog on Chrome, my header looks broken. Well, since Chrome is in its beta stages, it will be improved. I just loved the chrome browser because I can buy cheap mobile phones online.

You should try other JavaScript tests (i.e. http://celtickane.com/webdesign/jsspeedarchive.php), and not the Google one. Same thing happens with Apple’s test; they tend to benefit the parts where they are fastest…

Are you kidding me! Look at the page — it shows Firefox with add-ons performing better than without? Its total runtime is a half a second. Why dont you use a real JS benchmarking site:

I never knew there were websites for javascript testing. I would do a google search for javascript testing and would probably make a blog post for that.

IE7 should be banned! ;) It’s proven once again that IE sucks! ;)
Anyway, I haven’t try Chrome out yet, maybe I’ll, but I wonder if it beats Firefox?!

Why didn’t you test Safari, another webkit based browser?

Also webkit contricts much more stiffly to web standards, much more than Firefox. So maybe its not that Chrome is messing it up, rather that your’re blog is not up to standards.

I don’t have safari installed on my laptop.

lol, you said my blog is not up to standard. That is hilarious.

Safari’s score was 221 in mine (OS X).

And this blog looks okay in Safari too, so this blog is “up to standards,” so to speak. It’s in WordPress; how would that be not “up to standards?”

thanks JMacalinao for testing safari. So Safari is higher than Firefox. Good job safari.
Also, I think Ismael is kidding or he made a typo when commenting.

Since Javascript runs on the client, it is not accurate to compare the results from two different computers.

Well, I have tested Chrome and I liked it! It’s fast but I think I’m going to stick to FireFox! ;)

Good effort. It’s nice to see a full set of results which paints a more accurate picture, compared to the incomplete one illustrated at Digg.com:

“IE7 should be banned!”

How do you propose we go about ‘banning’ a web browser?

lol, banning IE 7 is like banning windows which is impossible right now. Just avoid IE 7 and you problem is solved

In a world where 1terabyte drives are under $200 a 20 meg difference is hard to grasp as being an issue, it would make it faster I bet.. it’ll be interesting to see how this develops..

your worried about the install size? get a life.
for a browser that just came out in it’s beta stage it’s doing very well. google aint a stupid company and we will all start to see things implemented. i hope google realeases an OS one day.
